The Christianity Hussain Yee left, and the Islam he kept
Hussain Yee says Christianity makes everything acceptable if a person loves Jesus. His own interview, the New Testament, and Islam's most authoritative collections tell a different story.
IMPORTANT: The articles on this site are the personal opinion of the author and are provided for informational purposes only. Use of this website is at the reader's own risk.
Hussain Yee is a well-known Muslim preacher in Malaysia, a former Buddhist who has spent decades calling people to Islam. The story he tells about his own journey turns on one claim about Christianity. In an interview about his conversion, he said this about Christianity when compared to Buddhism:
“About Christianity today is, everything is okay. As long you love Jesus, you believe in Jesus, He is your salvation, then you are safe. This seems to be very interesting, because from there’s a lot of don’ts before, now there’s a lot of do now.”
— Hussain Yee · interview, “Exploring Christianity” (05:32) · YouTube
That description deserves a response, not a caricature. My response is to show three main things, and then lets Islam’s own sources carry the comparison further. It tests Yee’s description of Christianity against the New Testament. It tests his chosen hero, ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb, against Islam’s own most authoritative collections. And it tests his statement that Muslims already believe in Jesus against the Jesus of the Gospel.
The Christianity Yee describes is not Christianity
If everything were permitted as long as a person loves Jesus, the New Testament would have to say so. It says the opposite. Paul addresses the exact objection that grace creates a rule-free life:
“What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it?”
Paul lists the works that exclude a person from the kingdom and then makes a statement Yee’s summary quietly drops:
“Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.”
“And such were some of you” is the sentence that separates Christianity from everything-goes. Christians are not people who have been told their sins do not count. They are people who have been washed out of those sins. The salvation is by grace, not earned by a ledger of works:
“For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.”
Notice the last line. The saved person is created for good works. Grace does not file sins under “forgiven” and leave the sinner as he was. It remakes him.
Jesus raises the standard; he does not lower it
Yee remembers Christianity as a long list of do’s replacing a long list of don’ts. Jesus’ most famous sermon moves in the opposite direction, from permitted external behavior to the heart behind it:
“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart.”
When a woman caught in adultery was dragged before Jesus, the crowd wanted a stoning. Jesus dispersed the accusers, and the account closes with mercy carrying a command:
“Jesus stood up and said to her, ‘Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?’ She said, ‘No one, Lord.’ And Jesus said, ‘Neither do I condemn you; go, and from now on sin no more.’”
“Neither do I condemn you” and “sin no more” stand or fall together. That is Christianity’s actual shape: forgiveness for the guilty, and a new life afterward, not permission in advance.
The Muslim whose biography convinced him
Yee dates his conversion to a single moment: “1968, I read the life history of Umar ibn al-Khattab and then I became a Muslim” (01:46 · YouTube). He is right to stake everything on ʿUmar, because ʿUmar is not a marginal figure. Sunnis count him the second caliph, one of the ten promised paradise. He is exactly the kind of witness whose testimony a Muslim apologist must accept. So read him in full.
The veil that covers Muslim women today is traced, in Islam’s own canonical collection, to ʿUmar pressing the Prophet for a ruling until a verse arrived:
“Narrated ʿĀʾisha: The wives of the Prophet used to go to Al-Manasi, a vast open place (near Baqiʿ at Medina) to answer the call of nature at night. ʿUmar used to say to the Prophet ‘Let your wives be veiled,’ but Allah’s Apostle did not do so. One night Sauda bint Zamʿa the wife of the Prophet went out at ʿIsha’ time and she was a tall lady. ʿUmar addressed her and said, ‘I have recognized you, O Sauda.’ He said so, as he desired eagerly that the verses of Al-Hijab (the observing of veils by the Muslim women) may be revealed. So Allah revealed the verses of ‘Al-Hijab.’”
It troubles me every time reading this hadith that ʿUmar’s is able to find the Prophet’s wife in “a vast open place” when she “answer the call of nature at night”. In this report the initiative belongs to the Companion, not to revelation: ʿUmar’s eagerness opens the chapter of the veil that still governs Muslim women today even in the most impractical geography. Of course Yee probably did not read this hadith and more when he chose to convert to Islam in a country that makes apostacy almost impossible.
ʿUmar’s conduct toward the least powerful women in the community is on record too, preserved in the ḥadīth authentication database Islam’s scholars themselves use:
“ʿUmar saw a woman wearing a jilbab and said, ‘Have you been manumitted?’ She replied, ‘No.’ He said, ‘Take it off your head; the jilbab is only for free women.’ She hesitated, so he approached her with a stick and struck her on the head until she dropped it.”
— al-Mustadrak ʿalā al-Ṣaḥīḥayn, verified collection at dorar.net · [see Note 1]
A slave woman desired modesty in front of the hosts of male she was serving. The caliph beat her head with a stick until she dropped her covering. Is modest dressing was a privilege of the free only? This is the ʿUmar and his records within Islam that convinced Hussain Yee into Islam. And they speak for themselves.
The religion Yee kept, on lust, in its own words
The New Testament states a stricter rule than any Yee attributes to Islam, and Islam’s own collections supply the comparison.
Jesus forbids not just the act but the desire — “everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart” (Matthew 5:28 · ESV) — the same sentence he spoke in the Sermon on the Mount, quoted above.
Islam’s most authoritative collection quotes Muhammad explaining that every human being, Muslim included, has been assigned a quota of adultery by divine decree:
Abu Huraira reported Allah’s Apostle (ﷺ) as saying: “Verily Allah has fixed the very portion of adultery which a man will indulge in, and which he of necessity must commit. The adultery of the eye is the lustful look, and the adultery of the tongue is the licentious speech, the heart desires and yearns, which the parts may or may not put into effect.”
A parallel ṣaḥīḥ report renders the same teaching with an addition worth pausing over: the son of Adam has this inevitable share “whether he is aware of it or not”
Narrated Ibn `Abbas: I did not see anything so resembling minor sins as what Abu Huraira said from the Prophet, who said, “Allah has written for the son of Adam his inevitable share of adultery whether he is aware of it or not: The adultery of the eye is the looking (at something which is sinful to look at), and the adultery of the tongue is to utter (what it is unlawful to utter), and the innerself wishes and longs for (adultery) and the private parts turn that into reality or refrain from submitting to the temptation.”
A lustful look, in Christian teaching, is sin a man commits and must renounce. In Muhammad’s, it is a fixed portion Allah assigned and “of necessity” a man must commit. Which of these two religions tells its men that lust is inevitable?
Islam’s own collections also record its prophet’s practice. After seeing a woman, Muhammad went home to Zainab one of his wives, then returned to his companions with this instruction:
Jabir reported that Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) saw a woman, and so he came to his wife, Zainab, as she was tanning a leather and had sexual intercourse with her. He then went to his Companions and told them: “The woman advances and retires in the shape of a devil, so when one of you sees a woman, he should come to his wife, for that will repel what he feels in his heart.”
A Muslim will rightly answer that the Qur’an commands believing men to “lower their gaze and be modest” (Qur’an 24:30 · Sūrat al-Nūr · Pickthall). Grant it — and then note what Islam sets beside the command: not a private standard merely, but a pattern of conduct — “Verily in the messenger of Allah ye have a good example for him who looketh unto Allah and the Last Day, and remembereth Allah much” (Qur’an 33:21 · Sūrat al-Aḥzāb · Pickthall). And the pattern’s own record, on the Qur’an’s account, touches Zaynab, the wife of Zayd, Muhammad’s adopted son. When Zayd complained of his wife, the Prophet told him to keep her — while, as the verse itself discloses, hiding “in thy mind that which Allah was to bring to light.” Zayd divorced her, and the Prophet married her. The verse supplies its own rationale — “so that (henceforth) there may be no sin for believers in respect of wives of their adopted sons” (Qur’an 33:37 · Sūrat al-Aḥzāb · Pickthall) — and Muslim readers take that rationale as the marriage’s purpose. But the rationale addresses a case the Prophet’s own hidden wish had created, as the verse’s own sequence concedes. ʿĀʾisha’s comment on it passed into the canonical record: “If Allah’s Messenger were to conceal anything of the Qur’an he would have concealed this Verse” (Sahih al-Bukhari 7420) — a measure, from inside the household, of how much this verse mattered. The man whom 24:30 commands to lower his gaze is, by Islam’s own reckoning, the pattern for the believers; and the pattern’s hidden wish became, in the Qur’an’s own telling, a verse of permission.
Jesus, tempted in every way yet without sin, taught his followers to cut off the occasion of sin and to be pure in heart (Matthew 5:29–30 · ESV). The New Testament never excuses desire by decree. That is the testimony of the two faiths on lust, from their own sources.
Sins transferred to the Jews and the Christians
Yee’s summary of Christianity, “believe in Jesus and you are safe, everything is okay,” is closer to Islam’s own doctrine of the afterlife than to anything in the Gospel. Islam’s most authoritative collection teaches that on the Day of Resurrection, Allah takes a Muslim’s sins and loads them onto a Jew or a Christian, who is then dragged into hell in the Muslim’s place:
“Abu Musa’ reported that Allah’s Messenger said: When it will be the Day of Resurrection Allah would deliver to every Muslim a Jew or a Christian and say: That is your rescue from Hell-Fire.”
“Abu Burda reported on the authority of his father that Allah’s Apostle said: No Muslim would die but Allah would admit in his stead a Jew or a Christian in Hell-Fire.”
The same collection raises the stakes to whatever size the sins happen to be:
Abu Burda reported Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) as saying: “There would come people amongst the Muslims on the Day of Resurrection with as heavy sins as a mountain, and Allah would forgive them and He would place in their stead the Jews and the Christians.”
Read those three reports beside what the Qur’an itself says about moral responsibility:
قُلْ أَغَيْرَ ٱللَّهِ أَبْغِى رَبًّۭا وَهُوَ رَبُّ كُلِّ شَىْءٍۢ ۚ وَلَا تَكْسِبُ كُلُّ نَفْسٍ إِلَّا عَلَيْهَا ۚ وَلَا تَزِرُ وَازِرَةٌۭ وِزْرَ أُخْرَىٰ ۚ ثُمَّ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكُم مَّرْجِعُكُمْ فَيُنَبِّئُكُم بِمَا كُنتُمْ فِيهِ تَخْتَلِفُونَ“Say: Shall I seek another than Allah for Lord, when He is Lord of all things? Each soul earneth only on its own account, nor doth any laden bear another’s load. Then unto your Lord is your return and He will tell you that wherein ye differed.”
— Qur’an 6:164 · Sūrat al-Anʿām · Pickthall
No soul bears another’s load, says the Qur’an, while Islam’s most authoritative ḥadīth collection says a Muslim’s mountain of sins is loaded onto Jews and Christians as “his rescue from Hell-Fire.” The Gospel, meanwhile, has one substitutionary death at its center, accepted by faith, with the forgiven man commanded to sin no more. Christianity has never taught “believe and do anything.” Islam’s own canon, on the testimony above, comes close to teaching that a Muslim’s debt of sin can be discharged onto another’s account.
Yee may respond that only shirk is unforgivable, everything else being pardoned by Allah’s will. The Qur’an’s wording is different:
إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَا يَغْفِرُ أَن يُشْرَكَ بِهِۦ وَيَغْفِرُ مَا دُونَ ذَٰلِكَ لِمَن يَشَآءُ ۚ وَمَن يُشْرِكْ بِٱللَّهِ فَقَدِ ٱفْتَرَىٰٓ إِثْمًا عَظِيمًا“Lo! Allah forgiveth not that a partner should be ascribed unto Him. He forgiveth (all) save that to whom He will. Whoso ascribeth partners to Allah, he hath indeed invented a tremendous sin.”
— Qur’an 4:48 · Sūrat an-Nisāʾ · Pickthall
Forgiveness of everything less than shirk is “for whom He will,” not for everyone. Between the decree of adultery quotas, the mountains of sin transferred to Jews and Christians, and a divine pardon dispensed at will, the picture of moral seriousness that Yee holds up against Christianity is not what his own sources describe.
When lying is not lying
Yee presents Islam as the complete religion of truth, “al-Ḥaqq,” and contrasts it with what he calls half-truth. Islam’s scholars themselves record an authorized category of false statement, and the cases are broader than warfare. The Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim chapter on permissible lying (al-Riqāq, Bāb al-iṣābah fī qawl al-kadhib, chapter 53) reports:
“She told him that she heard the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, say, ‘The liar is not the one who reconciles between people, speaks well, and promotes good.’ Ibn Shihab said, ‘I have never heard of any permission being granted for anything that people call a lie, except in three cases: war, reconciliation among people, and a man speaking to his wife, and a woman speaking to her husband.’”
— Sahih Muslim 2605a · Translastion by DeepL from Arabic
The report counts four clauses under “three cases,” the two spousal directions ranking as one; on that count, marriage itself is an authorized category of lying. A religion that licenses falsehood between husband and wife is a poor position from which to accuse another religion of half-truths. No Gospel text authorizes a lie for any cause; Jesus said on the Sermon on the Mount “Let what you say be simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything more than this comes from evil.” (Matthew 5:37 · ESV).
Mutʿah: permitted, practiced, prohibited
The Qur’an permits a Muslim man to marry “two or three or four” women, and in the same breath names sexual access to “those your right hands possess,” that is, enslaved women (Qur’an 4:3 · Sūrat an-Nisāʾ · Pickthall). It also concedes that equality between wives is impossible: “Ye will not be able to deal equally between (your) wives, however much ye wish (to do so)” (Qur’an 4:129 · Pickthall). A permission granted in the same chapter as an admission that the permission’s condition cannot be met is not a moral ideal.
Temporary marriage, mutʿah, goes further. Islam’s own collections record that it was practiced during Muhammad’s lifetime, then continued past his death:
“’Ali b. Abi Talib reported that Allah’s Messenger prohibited on the Day of Khaibar the contracting of temporary marriage with women and the eating of the flesh of domestic asses.”
“‘Ati’ reported that Jabir b. Abdullah came to perform ’Umra, and we came to his abode, and the people asked him about different things, and then they made a mention of temporary marriage, whereupon he said: Yes, we had been benefiting ourselves by this temporary marriage during the lifetime of the Prophet and during the time of Abu Bakr and ’Umar.”
A practice whose abolition required a special prohibition, and which Muslims continued to “benefit” from after the prohibition, was part of the Islam that Hussain Yee joined. Jesus grounds marriage not in a man’s shifting quota of affection but in creation itself:
“‘Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.’ So they are no longer two but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate.”
“Muslims believe in Jesus” — which Jesus?
Yee’s second argument is that Muslims already believe in Jesus, so the distance between the faiths is small (06:43 · YouTube). Muslims do revere ʿĪsā as a prophet and virgin-born Messiah. But belief in a name is not belief in the person.
The Jesus of the Gospel is the crucified and risen Son of God. The Qur’an denies both:
وَقَوْلِهِمْ إِنَّا قَتَلْنَا ٱلْمَسِيحَ عِيسَى ٱبْنَ مَرْيَمَ رَسُولَ ٱللَّهِ وَمَا قَتَلُوهُ وَمَا صَلَبُوهُ وَلَٰكِن شُبِّهَ لَهُمْ ۚ وَإِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ ٱخْتَلَفُوا۟ فِيهِ لَفِى شَكٍّۢ مِّنْهُ ۚ مَا لَهُم بِهِۦ مِنْ عِلْمٍ إِلَّا ٱتِّبَاعَ ٱلظَّنِّ ۚ وَمَا قَتَلُوهُ يَقِينًۢا“And because of their saying: We slew the Messiah, Jesus son of Mary, Allah’s messenger - they slew him not nor crucified him, but it appeared so unto them; and lo! those who disagree concerning it are in doubt thereof; they have no knowledge thereof save pursuit of a conjecture; they slew him not for certain.”
— Qur’an 4:157 · Sūrat an-Nisāʾ · Pickthall
Allah is the Messiah, son of Mary. The Messiah (himself) said: O Children of Israel, worship Allah, my Lord and your Lord. Lo! whoso ascribeth partners unto Allah, for him Allah hath forbidden paradise. His abode is the Fire. For evil-doers there will be no helpers.”
— Qur’an 5:72 · Sūrat al-Māʾidah · Pickthall
The New Testament’s Jesus is the eternal Word (John 1:1 · ESV), crucified publicly (Luke 23:33 · ESV), raised on the third day according to a revelation Paul says he received (1 Corinthians 15:3–4 · ESV) from Christ himself (Galations 1:12 · ESV). A book that denies the crucifixion six centuries later does not confirm the Gospel. Both accounts cannot be true.
Two laws for the same act
The Qur’an prescribes different fates for women and men caught in the same act:
وَٱلَّٰتِى يَأْتِينَ ٱلْفَٰحِشَةَ مِن نِّسَآئِكُمْ فَٱسْتَشْهِدُوا۟ عَلَيْهِنَّ أَرْبَعَةًۭ مِّنكُمْ ۖ فَإِن شَهِدُوا۟ فَأَمْسِكُوهُنَّ فِى ٱلْبُيُوتِ حَتَّىٰ يَتَوَفَّىٰهُنَّ ٱلْمَوْتُ أَوْ يَجْعَلَ ٱللَّهُ لَهُنَّ سَبِيلًۭا“As for those of your women who are guilty of lewdness, call to witness four of you against them. And if they testify (to the truth of the allegation) then confine them to the houses until death take them or (until) Allah appoint for them a way (through new legislation).”
— Qur’an 4:15 · Sūrat an-Nisāʾ · Pickthall
وَٱلَّذَانِ يَأْتِيَٰنِهَا مِنكُمْ فَـَٔاذُوهُمَا ۖ فَإِن تَابَا وَأَصْلَحَا فَأَعْرِضُوا۟ عَنْهُمَآ ۗ إِنَّ ٱللَّهُ كَانَ تَوَّابًۭا رَّحِيمًا“And as for the two of you who are guilty thereof, punish them both. And if they repent and improve, then let them be. Lo! Allah is ever relenting, Merciful.”
— Qur’an 4:16 · Sūrat an-Nisāʾ · Pickthall
Women who are guilty of lewdness will be under house detention for life. However al-Jalālayn supplies the appointed way out; a hundred lashes for virgins and stoning for the married. (Tafsīr al-Jalālayn on 4:15)
Men caught commiting lewd act adultery or homosexual intercourse, their prescribed punishment to both is insults and beatings with sandals. The way out for these men as al-Jalālayn says is simply “but if they repent of this lewd act and make amends through good action then leave them be and do not harm them”. (Tafsīr al-Jalālayn on 4:16)
The treatment of both act of lewdness and their way out is so different in Islam. The New Testament’s horizon God’s moral law and spiritual consequences apply equally: “There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.” (Galatians 3:28 · ESV).
Whom Allah leads astray
Yee left his old faith for Islam as “the religion of truth,” al-Ḥaqq. But the Qur’an says of guidance what it says of pardon — it is dispensed by will:
“Had Allah willed He could have made you (all) one nation, but He sendeth whom He will astray and guideth whom He will, and ye will indeed be asked of what ye used to do.”
— Qur’an 16:93 · Sūrat al-Naḥl · Pickthall
The same book that orders people to seek guidance and says Allah deliberately misleads some of them, also then questions them about the misguidance.
The God of the Bible does not entice anyone to evil:
“Let no one say when he is tempted, ‘I am being tempted by God,’ for God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempts no one.”
The question Hussain Yee must answer
Did Hussain Yee did honest comparative study between Christianity and Islam in his 4 years stay at various Masjids? How did he not highlight so many contradictions that exists in Islam and yet readily claim Christianity is a permissive religion? Scrutinize closely the morality of both religion and we’ll see a vast difference.
The New Testament condemns lust of the heart, adultery, greed, drunkenness, and lying, and offers guilty people cleansing and a new life through a crucified and risen Savior. Islam’s own ṣaḥīḥ hadith collections decree a fixed quota of adultery, transfer a Muslim’s mountain of sins onto Jews and Christians, license lying in marriage, preserve a temporary marriage practice abolished under pressure, trace the veil to one man’s petition; and the ḥadīth verification database Islam’s scholars themselves use preserves his beatings of a slave woman who wanted to be modest. The Qur’an denies the crucifixion, and says of guidance that Allah leads astray whom He will — yet still asks of every soul what it did. These are not two flavors of the same truth. Both accounts cannot be true, and the evidence above is not a matter of interpretation.
Jesus said the test is the fruit:
“You will recognize them by their fruits. Are grapes gathered from thornbushes, or figs from thistles?”
The Christian answer to Hussain Yee is not contempt for him or for any Muslim. It is the opposite: Christ died for the ungodly, and there is no other name by which anyone, Muslim or Christian or Buddhist, must be saved:
“And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”
